BSN number

If you are a resident in the Netherlands or becoming one than you will need a BSN number (Burgerservicenummer).

The BSN number is since 2007 implemented together with DigiD and includes 9 figures. The purpose of the BSN number is to prevent mistakes in identities. Everyone has their own unique number. Currently, the Dutch Identification card includes the BSN number as a QR code and with readable numbers on the back of the card. These changes have been made to prevent identification fraude. As an international student you will receive a paper that includes your BSN. 

The BSN is usable for your taxes or your health care for example or most importantly to work.

When do I need a BSN number?

As a Dutch residents you will get a BSN number when you get born, that is obligated. But do you need one as international student and when? If you are staying in the Netherlands for longer than 4 monts you will need a BSN. This is because you stay for a long period of time in the Netherlands and then you will probably need to work as well.

How do I apply for a BSN number?

If you qualify for a BSN number than you have to apply for one, but how? First of all you have to register yourself at the town you are living in. After, you can apply for the BSN. If you go to the commune you can apply for a BSN, this needs to be done within 5 days after your arrival in the Netherlands.

Why do you need a BSN number?

If you stay longer than 4 months in the Netherlands it is mandatory to have a BSN. Moreover, if you want to work in the Netherlands you need a BSN, if not, you are not allowed to work here. Therefore, if you are looking for a job, assure you have the BSN number.
