What Does the New Coalition Mean for Us as Students?

Last week, the new coalition presented their governing plans. The collaboration between PVV, BBB, NSC, and VVD has led to several interesting changes, especially for us as students. But what exactly do these plans mean? In this blog, we clearly explain what will change and how it will affect our lives as students.

Education Quality Recovery Plan

One of the main points in the new governing plans is the Education Quality Recovery Plan. This plan aims to ensure that students can develop better, as things have been somewhat chaotic in recent years.

The Recovery Plan aims to improve the quality of education and give students the chance to reach their full potential. This is great news for us since better education means we will be better prepared for our future careers.

Compensation for the Unlucky Generation

A one-time compensation for the so-called unlucky generation is planned for 2027. Students who fall into this category will receive a one-time compensation of 1000 euros. This is intended to alleviate the financial burden they have experienced.

Long-Study Penalty

A less positive aspect of the new plans is the return of the long-study penalty. For each year that you take longer to complete your studies than planned, you will receive a fine of 3000 euros. This means we need to plan better and finish our studies on time to avoid extra costs. The government hopes this will reduce the number of perpetual students and help them enter the job market sooner.

More Attention to Further Education

The coalition also wants to focus more on further education, starting at the primary school level. This means there will be more emphasis on the possibilities for further education, which will hopefully lead to better-informed choices and better alignment with the job market.

Better Alignment of Vocational Education

For vocational education (MBO) students, the plans are also positive. The coalition wants vocational education to align better with the job market. This should result in better job opportunities after completing an MBO program.

Increase in Purchasing Power

Due to the increase in purchasing power, the coalition wants to help by introducing an extra bracket in income tax. This means we will pay less tax. Additionally, more security will be offered to freelancers and temporary workers.

Improvement in Housing

Finally, the coalition parties want to improve housing. This means more homes will be built, and sustainability regulations will be accelerated. For us as students, this hopefully means more affordable and better housing options.

Conclusion

The new governing plans of the coalition have both positive and negative effects on us as students. On the one hand, there is the one-time compensation and the improvement of education quality, but on the other hand, there is also the return of the long-study penalty. It is important to keep an eye on these changes and adapt as best as we can to the new situation. Ultimately, these measures will hopefully contribute to a better future for all of us.
