If you are a resident in the Netherlands or becoming one than you will need a BSN number (Burgerservicenummer). The BSN number is since 2007 implemented together with DigiD and includes 9 figures. The purpose of the BSN number is to prevent mistakes in identities. Everyone has their own unique number. Currently, the Dutch Identification card includes the BSN number as a QR code and with readable numbers on the back of the card. These changes have been made to prevent identification fraude. As an international student you will receive a paper that includes your BSN.  The BSN is usable for your taxes or your health care for example or most importantly to work.
